Baptism and Christening Gowns
We sell our baby boy and girl christening gowns for all different occasions and purposes, but the most common are the rites and liturgy associated with baptism and christening. Amongst the different forms of Christianity, the manner of baptizing differs and has changed over time.
The usual form of baptism among early Christians in the 1st century AD was to be immersed totally or partially in water. In the earliest centuries after the onset of Christianity, archaeological evidence suggest that people would stand in water while water was poured on the upper body. Today, depending on the practice and denomination, it’s common to either pour or sprinkle water. Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic traditionally practice total immersion in water. Contemporary practices have families christening their children at a young age.
Within the Greek Orthodox Church, baptismal day is one of the most important days for a child. Baptism usually occurs the first year after the baby is born. Often the baby won’t have a name until the child is baptized. During the Greek Orthodox tradition it’s not uncommon for the priest to cut a lock of the baby’s hair to signify his or her allegiance to Christ in mind, should and body. Christening gowns are used when the godparents of the child dress the baby in the process known as vesting. In all baptismal ceremonies, despite denomination, many parents choose to dress their child in a beautiful white gown. At Christneinggowns.com, we specialize in these dresses and have customers all over the world who use these garments in various forms of baby baptism. The Penelope heirloom christening gown and the Tim heirloom set has been popular choices for girls and boys when receiving their christening.
The christening gown itself is a symbol and has a special meaning for each family. Many families keep their dress as an heirloom and pass their gown from one generation to the next. When purchasing a dress, it should be considered an heirloom and not for one-time use. The use of the christening gown has evolved over time. It was once just a simple white robe, but starting in the late 19th century, christening gowns became more intricate. We at Christeninggowns.com design our gowns with intricately designed cloths. We embellish our gowns with embroidery and lace.
Baptismal outfits are also becoming increasingly popular amongst families. Baptismal outfits are made out of white fabric, consisting of a romper with a vest and other accessories. We’re proud to be involved in such special moments for all our customers and work hard to design beautiful garments that you will treasure.
We’re always interested in learning about our customer’s traditions and how they use our dresses.
